Rewarding Pedestrians: Creating a Good Walking Environment

Video: Click here
Walkability has many health, environmental, and economic benefits, but what exactly makes a city pedestrian friendly? Learn how various pedestrian advocacy groups work on implementing changes through sustained action at the local level.

Our Complete Streets/Traffic Calming/Streetscape has begun.  Working with the firms Birchler & Arroyo Associated, Inc. and Grissim Metz Andriese Associates, the DDA is designing a plan for the DDA district that will be visually appealing and easily accessible for anyone to move through regardless of the chosen mode of transportation.

One of the many assets here in Oxford is M24 because of the exposure our businesses acquire from the 35,000 cars and trucks that travel this roadway daily.  Yet the danger that exists, especially to pedestrians, because of the speed of the traffic and the number of vehicles driving through the downtown needs to be minimized to ensure our residents and visitors have a safe, more enjoyable shopping and dining experience while here.  People need to feel safe moving along and crossing M24.

These goals along with improving the aesthetic look of Oxford are being incorporated into the plan.  Improving our downtown will in turn improve the economic atmosphere here and this is a win-win for all.  The end result is beneficial to downtown Oxford, the Village and Oxford Township as well as our neighbors to the north and south, east and west.

On Wednesday, November 16th from 4 – 7pm, the first draft of the plan will be unveiled for your comments and feedback.  This presentation will be on display in the ArtCapsule, located at 5 South Washington.  Stop by at your convenience, speak with members of the DDA’s Economic Restructuring committee as well as representatives from the firms hired to work with the DDA.  It is critical to the success of this project that it is reflective of ALL of Oxford, not just a few.  Your input is necessary so make plans and encourage your friends and neighbors to stop by ArtCapsule and make your opinion known.  This will be a casual atmosphere with light refreshments provided.
Thank you for your continued support.
